My work
I am a student! However, I have some previous work experience in the field, most notably my self published comics and some contractual work I have done for Buzzfeed! You can also check out my portfolio here!
My social media
I use social media to engage with the people who enjoy the work I create and to be around other creators!
Community is very important to me and I want my own and other people's voices to be heard! Social Media is great for networking, but it can also just be an enjoyable space!
You can find me as "sketchophia"!
About me
Who am I?My name is Phia Eulenberg.
Well, that is my alias. "Phia" comes from "Sophia" (which is my real name) and "Eulenberg" was a supposed surname on my grandmother's side. I wanted to use an alias online and after her passing, I thought I would honour her with it. I like cats, play guitar, and occassionally rollerskate.Born in Berlin, 1998, in autumn, to "teardrop" by Massive Attack I would say a lot of my vibes and aesthetic are centred around exactly that.
My older sisters have always been very influential to me, growing up with murder mysteries and early 00's fashion, Nirvana and Gorrilaz, and you get a teenager who is obsessed with Shelock Holmes and Detective Conan and just dying to make comics. Why Comics?I've loved comics for as long as I can think back. And I know, that is what they all say, but it's true.
My first exposures were "Donald Duck" comics, and then later on "Detective Conan" (aka Case Closed) when I was about 7 years old, which then got me into actually focusing on improving my art. My parents (both artists) got me a "how to draw manga" book - and the nightmare began.Comics were a way for me to tell the stories and lives that went on in my head. I always came up with stories and characters, and I distinctly remember sitting around the bonfire with my family one night and thinking: "it's such a shame I only get to experience one life and only through my own eyes".
In a way, every comic panel, every character, every story, is a glimpse into a different life for me. A different universe.
Design communicates to a target audience. Fine Art creates a place to express your own views and resonate with people. Storytelling imagines scenarios and characters, communicate expression of fictional universes, a place to escape into.Comics combine all of these things without having to cast actors. And I love being in charge!Okay but... Why Horror?Oh, right.
Well, as previously mentioned, my sisters were kinda obsessed with Sherlock Holmes and murder mystery stuff! My mum always watched Columbo and Murder She Wrote... I guess, in a way, that was just my turf. I really loved how Gosho Aoyama drew blood.
Of course, there is a difference between Mystery and Horror.
My first exposure to horror was, of course, Stephen King. Couldn't really get into that at the time.
But then, as for any kid growing up on the internet, the good ole creepypasta did it!
Some Junji Ito jumpscares, body horror that wouldn't let me sleep - me and my brother were hooked! That, combined with my inherited onset of agoraphobia, and you get the perfect mix of "prone to anxiety" and "using fear as a coping mechanism" which adds up beautifully to: "I want to draw some fucked up shit, I think".Horror movies kinda bore me, but horror games have always spoken to me, especially if I watched my brother play them! Over the last few years I've discovered more books (came back to Stephen King), Sebastian Fitzek, Lovecraft (ew), etc. You get it.But enough of psycho analysing myself throughout my upbringing.
I just think horror is kinda neat.
Sure, it works with collective societal fears, offers escapism while still confronting one's own fears, coping mechanisms especially for anxiety ridden, socially and economically conscious wrecks...
But it's also just nice to read and see something that makes your spine tingle every once in a while!!What else is there about me?I'm gay and I like screaming women in punk music. If you have read this far, I'm assuming I didn't bore you too much and I'm glad you're here! If you want, check out some of my work above! And if you're thinking about hiring me for a project, feel free to send me an e-mail!
Au Revoir, take care!
Phia.
